First-rate home-cooked soul food has earned a stellar reputation for this South Side institution.
The fried chicken is arguably the city's best; barbecued ribs, roast turkey, turnip and mustard greens, and crunchy fried
catfish are other standouts. There's even a brief wine list. The setting is surprisingly genteel for such down-home fare:
waiters glide about in tuxedo shirts and bow ties, tables have starched white cloths, and African and Haitian art graces the
walls. AE, D, DC, MC, V. Closed Tues. -Fodor's

August 14, 2004 Jeena Evanston, IL I heard of Army & Lou's through a local television program.
Since there are not a lot of southern restaruants on the Northshore and not many that can compete with my mother's southern
style cooking, I decided to give them a try.... Mother dear, you've got competition. The food is phenomenal. Everyone from
the waitstaff to the customers were very friendly. The paintings are astonishing and the raspberry iced tea is the best I've
ever had. Unfortunately, I was too stuffed to have desert, but will definitely have it next time since I plan on making Army
& Lou's a regular.
February 19, 2004 Scott Rosenfeld Chicago, Il I started going to Army and Lou's in the
fall of 2000. My friend's and I were tried of the same Sunday brunch spots the North Side had to offer and we took a chance
on Army and Lou's. I have been back once a year ever since! This was former mayor Harold Washington's favorite spot, after
my first visit I knew why. I prefer going there on Sunday morning because the run a lot of specials that morning. The fried
chicken is without equal, the chicken and dumplings melt in your mouth, the corn muffins are fantastic, the chicken gumbo
is amazing and if you still have room, the peach cobbler and the sweet potato pie sends you on your way insuring the most
delightful food coma ever. The service here is very warm and friendly and your fellow diners on a Sunday morning are all dressed
to the "9s" in their Sunday best. Give them a chance, you won't be disappointed.

Renee Brown says: On Thursday 5/26/05 6:57 PM Eat there on a regular basis. The very finest
in soul food ever! Love the cobblers too. Service has picked up recently in that you are seated and served a bit faster. Thank
god! I just found out that they are like the oldest soul food establishment in the midwest. They are 60 years old this year.
I can remember whem my mother and father took me to Army & Lou's every Sunday after church when I was little and that was
a very long time ago. I highly recommend a visit.

April 24, 2005 Heidi Chicago, IL Go when you aren't in a hurry; the service
was excrutiatingly slooow. I had to ask for silverware, even though bussers were swarming all around. I think it depends on
the server; the table near me looked like they were getting excellent service. Ask for corn muffins if they aren't put on
the table; they are outstanding.
March 7, 2005 Frank Chicago, IL Food is very very good. Its a little pricey,
but i guess its worth it.

Ann says: On Monday 3/28/05 6:26 PM The food is the bomb! Did a take out for family members
for Easter and everyone loved it! Delicious soulfood to eat there or take out. We had the turkey w/ dressing, candied yams,
greens, corn rolls, and mac n cheese and I can't forget the peach cobbler. Best soul food in Chicago! Highly recommended.

December 7, 2002 James Leesch Deerfield, Il Growing up in the South, I lamented
the loss of good soul food when we moved to the north suburbs of Chicago. Then a friend introduced me to Army & Lou's, and
about once a year I get to go home. The chicken is better than some of the restaurants back in Georgia, and the cornbread
puts mom's to shame. You have to try the bread pudding - except that you have to have the peach cobbler. Hmm. Go with both,
and make your mom proud.
